Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection - 2007
This was a website for the Nintendo DS game system for players to connect with other players through the Wi-Fi service. There were player rankings, top cities and a list of who's connected. Each game had it's own page with content driven by that game. The design needed to be consistent across all the pages, but each game page had to look unique.
The gaming hub section consisted of an overview page and 4 pages specific to individual games. The idea was to have the layout be the same across all the pages, but the colors and header graphics would fit the style of the game. It was up to me to design these 5 pages. I chose styles for each page based on the color style from existing packaging or logos. I came up with the idea to take the graphic elements from the games and use them in the headers to make them more interesting as well as to break up the "blockyness" of the modules. The modules consisted of stats from the gaming on the service. How many users were logged on, high score, that sort of thing. We designed the charts and had them developed in Flash.
I was tasked with designing the header navigation. We already had a working style so I worked within that and designed what you see below. The functionality was when you hover over a Primary link, the secondary navigation would slide down out of the top. The transition effects included a color swipe across the hovered primary link, the semi-transparent pane sliding down with a highlight flash from left to right. When you hovered over a secondary navigation the blue glow would expand out from the center of the words as the words fade from blue to white. This all happened very quickly so the transitions were very smooth.
