Sam's Club (R) Travel - Powered by Expedia - 2006/2007
I was contracted by Expedia.com along with another contract designer to design a website for Sam's Club Travel. We were practically given creative freedom by Expedia and Sam's Club. We designed a few mockups and decided on a design that borrowed some design elements from the Sam's Club Travel brochure. When design was signed off by Sam's we split duties and my co-worker took the preliminary site image production and I switched to the search results pages. My co-worker moved to another job and I took over all the site and photo production. The site launched on Jan 29th 2007. Sam's Club and Expedia were both very happy with the final result.
The site required a lot of images. Expedia wanted to be set up with at least 3 months of photos to revolve into the site. Because there were several page types, one particular photo would have a minimum of 3 sizes. Some had as many as 6. Organizing and tracking which photos had been selected and produced was imperative. For instance, The Mexico location could have 3 different photos with 4 sizes for each photo.
As with most interaction design projects, we started by wire framing the site to get an idea of what needed to be where and to measure the prominence of the modules on the different pages. I took the wire framing to another level by color coding the modules so we could easily get an idea of what was where on each page. It saved thinking time being able to visually tell right away where the common modules were placed.
